A Pap smear test, also termed as a Pap test, is a screening method that includes collecting cells from the cervix, which lies in the lower part of the uterus that further opens into the vagina. This examination aims in detecting precancerous or cancerous cells in the cervix. The study has two segments, liquid-based cytology test and conventional Pap smear test. An early identification of such cells allows healthcare professionals to recommend suitable treatment before the cervical cancer develops.

This is important to know that Pap smear test is a screening test and not a diagnostic test.
A positive Pap smear test result indicates that the cell found in the patient’s cervix has abnormal cells (does not mean cancerous). Under such condition, further diagnostic testing like HPV test, biopsy or colposcopy is recommended by the healthcare professional.
While a negative Pap smear test result shows absence of abnormal cells and lower risk of cervical cancer.
A Pap smear test cannot detect human papillomavirus, it is a screening test for detection of any abnormality or cervical cancer. It studies abnormal cells on the cervix. Such abnormalities could be caused by an HPV infection.
Further to a Pap smear test, an HPV test is done that specifically examines the presence of high-risk types of HPV which could cause cervix cancer.
