What is the Hemogram Test (HMG)?

The complete hemogram test (HMG) includes the complete blood count test (CBC), the erythrocyte sedimentation rate test (ESR) and peripheral smear. The hemogram also known as haemogram test is a common blood test that helps in determining the condition of blood cells and detecting presence of inflammation, infections, leukaemia, and anaemia. In all, it helps assess overall health condition.

Blood consists of red blood cells (RBC’s), white blood cells (WBC’s) and platelets that perform daily functions for the body. RBC’s are responsible for carrying oxygen in blood stream. WBC’s are responsible for fighting infections, haemoglobin is the protein that carries oxygen in blood cells, haematocrit refers to the proportion of red blood cells (RBC’s) to plasma in your blood stream, platelets responsible for blood clotting.

Hemogram test is done to check for a blood problem, detect anomalies in blood indicating blood conditions, analyse and diagnose various disorders, inflammation, conditions, and infections. It helps in examining overall health and identification of medical conditions, problems, and diseases. Examination and analysis of certain blood disorders.

When to get Hemogram done?

The hemogram test is important for diagnosing various health issues such as anaemia, infections, inflammation, blood disorders, and many nutritional deficiencies. This test helps in monitoring the effect of treatments and medications on blood in order to assess the condition of health.

Doctors may prescribe hemogram test for the following:

  • Overall health assessment: This test is an important component of regular health check ups. It helps in assessment of a person’s overall health status and identification of health issues if any.
  • Diagnosis of a diseases
  • Monitoring progress of treatment
  • Monitoring overall health of people who may be suffering conditions related to blood
  • Symptoms such as extreme joint pain, extreme unintended weight loss, headaches, pain in shoulders, pelvis or neck, fever, irregular digestion, bloody stools etc.

What are the indications of levels of hemogram and what needs to be done?

Hemogram blood test reports the analysis of various parameters. The CBC (Complete blood count) test includes the results of blood components like RBC, WBC and platelets. ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) test indicate if the level of ESR is abnormal causing inflammation. The immune system responds to an infection or injury as inflammation. Inflammation could also be indicative of a chronic disease or another medical condition.

Complete Hemogram test measures the several components of blood, including:

  • White Blood Cells count (WBC’s): The total number of white blood cells in blood sample.
  • White Blood Cells Differential: 5 types of WBC’s present in blood called leukocytes includes neutrophils, monocytes, lymphocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. This test measures each kind of the above WBC’s in blood.

The levels may differ slightly on higher or lower range in cases like:

  • Presence of an infection can stimulate the body to produce a higher number of neutrophils in order to fight bacterial infection.
  • The levels of eosinophils may rise in allergies.
  • An increased number of lymphocytes may be produced in viral infections.

Red Blood Cells count (RBC’s): The number of red blood cells or erythrocytes present in the blood sample. Red Blood Cells (RBC’s) are produced in the bone marrow and upon maturing are released within the bloodstream. Bone marrow continues to produce new RBCs to compensate for the aged and ones that disintegrate or lost due to bleeding.

  • Haemoglobin: Amount of protein that carries oxygen in blood stream
  • Haematocrit: Percentage of total blood volume in the person that consists of RBC’s
  • RBC red blood cell indices: Calculations that help in understanding the physical characteristics of RBC’s.
  • Mean corpuscular volume (MCV): Measure of the average size of a single red blood cell (RBC)
  • Mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH): Measure of average amount of haemoglobin inside a single red blood cell (RBC).
  • Mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC): Measure of average concentration of haemoglobin inside a single red blood cell.
  • Red cell distribution width (RDW): Measure of the variation in the size of RBCs.
  • Reticulocyte count: Measure the absolute count or percentage of young red blood cells (RBCs) in the blood.
  • Platelet count: Measure of number of platelets also known as thrombocytes, in the blood sample. Platelets are special cell fragments which aid in clotting of blood.
  • Mean Platelet Volume (MPV): Measure of the average volume of platelets. Even if the platelet count is normal, the mean platelet volume can still be high or low.

The Complete Hemogram test also measures Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR).

Common terms used to describe Complete Blood Count (CBC) results are:

  • Thrombocytopenia - Platelet level is low. Indicating an underlying medical condition or a side effect from medication.
  • Thrombocytosis - Platelet level is high. Indicating an underlying medical condition or a side effect from medication.
  • Anaemia – Inadequate no. healthy Red Blood Cells, Haemoglobin, and Haematocrit. Anaemic people usually experience fatigue, weakness and anaemia has many causes, including low levels of some vitamins or iron, Loss of blood, or an underlying condition.
  • Leukopenia - Number of White Blood Cells is low. It is caused by a medical condition, such as an autoimmune disorder that destroys white blood cells, bone marrow problems, or cancer. Certain medications also can cause white blood cell counts to drop.
  • Leucocytosis – Number of White Blood Cells has increased. It may be due to an infection or inflammation or due to a reaction to medication.

ESR test results are measured in millimetres per hour (mm/hr). The higher the number, the higher the likelihood of inflammation. Overall, females naturally have higher ESR levels.

Elevated ESR levels can be caused due to conditions such as

  • Infection
  • Autoimmune conditions such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Anaemia
  • Diseases associated to Kidney or thyroid.
  • Certain types of cancer
  • Injury in Tissue or trauma

Lower than expected levels of ESR may be caused by conditions such as:

  • RBC disorders
  • Heart failure
  • Certain liver and kidney problems

What is the sample type?

A blood sample is required to perform the Hemogram test.

What is the preparation required by patient?

There is no specific preparation required for sample collection.

Q. What does a Hemogram blood test show?

The Hemogram test contains CBC (Complete Blood Count) test which is a blood test. CBC testing can help track a variety of conditions like diseases of immune system, leukaemia, anaemia, identify infections and blood cancers etc. CBC helps in checking the levels of RBC’s, WBC’s, platelets, Haemoglobin, Haematocrit, along with detailed analysis of each type of blood cells among other parameters. Also shows the ESR test results that are measured in millimetres per hour (mm/hr). The higher the number, the higher the likelihood of inflammation.

Q. What do Hemogram test results mean?

A Hemogram has CBC test that counts the no. of cells present in your blood. A low or high value or an abnormal value usually indicates a range of health issues that need to be taken care of. Also has ESR which detects any inflammation due to infection or other conditions.
