What is the CBC (Common Blood Count) Test?

The CBC (Complete Blood Count) test is a blood test. CBC testing can help track a variety of conditions like diseases of immune system, leukaemia, anaemia, identify infections and blood cancers etc. It helps in checking the levels of the following:

  • The number of RBC’s (Red Blood Cells) that carry oxygen from lungs to other body parts.
  • The number of WBC’s (White Blood Cells) that fight diseases and infections. CBC measures total number of WBC’s in your body.
  • WBC’s are of 5 major kinds. A study called CBC with differential measures the count of each type of WBC in the body.
  • The amount of Haemoglobin that is the protein which carries oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body
  • The number of Platelets, that help blood to clot and stop bleeding.
  • The measure of Haematocrit, that shows the fraction of blood constituted by RBC’s
  • Measures the mean red blood cell volume (MCV)
  • Measures the mean  haemoglobin  amount per red blood cell (MCH)
  • Measures the mean amount of haemoglobin relative to the size of the cell (haemoglobin concentration) per red blood cell (MCHC)
When to get CBC testing done?

CBC is a common blood test which is recommended for a variety of reasons:

  • Overall Health: CBC can be a significant part of a medical examination in order to check general health and can also help in identification of conditions like leukaemia and anaemia
  • Medical Condition: CBC testing can help in identifying the major cause and reason for symptoms including fatigue, weight loss, fever, weakness, bleeding, bruising or other indications of an infection or signs of cancer.
  • Blood Counts: CBC can help keep a check on the blood cell levels and count, also to check changes or alteration in levels while under medication or radiation. It can also be used to track blood count variation during chronic diseases.
What are the indications of high or low cbc blood cells count and what needs to be done?

A CBC counts the no. of cells present in your blood. There are several reasons which cbc result in levels not being in normal range.

  • Abnormal levels of (RBC’s) red blood cells, haemoglobin, or haematocrit may be an indicator of a heart disease, anaemia, or less level of iron in your body.
  • Low white blood cell (WBC’s) count may be an indicator of disorders such as bone marrow disorder , autoimmune disorder, or cancer.
  • High white blood cell (WBC’s) count may indicate an infection or a reaction to medicine or cancer.
  • Abnormal levels of platelets may indicate infection, reaction to medicine or drugs or presence of cancer.
  • Abnormal CBC levels may indicate presence of certain hereditary disorders.

Abnormal levels may also be due to other reasons and not always a medical condition that needs treatment. Diet, activity level, medicines, a menstrual period, not drinking enough water, alcohol consumption, smoking and other factors can affect the results. Talk with your medical examiner to learn what your results mean.
